Community Gardens

Community Gardens & KÉK
The Community Gardens Project is one of the most successful initiatives of the Contemporary Architecture Centre (KÉK), operating and continuously evolving since 2010. What began as an effort to introduce urban gardening in Hungary has grown into a program that supports the creation of community and school gardens and promotes sustainable urban living.
The initiative goes beyond gardening: it seeks to redefine the relationship between people and nature in the urban context, while strengthening local communities and contributing to a more livable city.
KÉK – Contemporary Architecture Centre
KÉK – Contemporary Architecture Centre is an independent professional organization dedicated to advancing the education, understanding, and development of architecture within the broadest possible professional and non-professional contexts.
Our goal is to create an open forum for shared thinking and dialogue about the city, and to make contemporary issues in architecture and urban development accessible to a wide public audience.
Our Projects
Community gardens are an innovative response to contemporary urban challenges. By bringing sustainable practices into the heart of the city, they offer a practical and accessible model for environmentally conscious living, while rethinking the use of urban space and the role of community.
Building on these principles, KÉK develops and implements a range of related projects that further support sustainable urban development, education, and community engagement.
Our Mission
Since 2010, KÉK has been working to introduce and promote urban gardening in Hungary. By establishing model gardens, it has helped the initiative evolve into a self-organizing movement. Our foundation has participated as a professional partner in the creation of numerous community and school gardens, and currently operates three community gardens.
Drawing on the experience of recent years, the long-term goal of the Program is to introduce and disseminate tools and methods that contribute to a more livable city and a more resilient society. It is essential that urban residents learn to adapt to climate change; therefore, we explore urban development tools and approaches that incorporate renewable energy solutions, and provide space for innovation and experimental models.
Through our gardens and public educational programs, concepts highly relevant to urban life—such as “urban heat islands” and the “reduction of ecological footprint”—are made accessible and understandable to a broad audience. Through our campaigns, we aim to share knowledge with city dwellers that enables them, as conscious urban users, to contribute—both individually and within local communities—to mitigating the harmful impacts of climate change.
Our programs for the wider public include community and professional events, public forums, lectures, and interactive activities for children.
We believe that individual example can inspire others to follow. Through our activities, we also contribute to improving the microclimate of our neighborhoods and our city by promoting environmentally conscious and sustainable lifestyles.
